woman personal training with a coach

Strength training for Psoriatic Arthritis: Catherine went from discouraged and hopeless to an active life with her family.

Strength training for Psoriatic Arthritis was a key element in Catherine being able to have dreams for her family’s future. Do you know you need to start your fitness journey but are fearful because of a chronic condition like psoriatic arthritis? Do you believe that you need to be fit already to join a gym? At Northglenn Health and Fitness (NHF), we’re here to change that perception and show you that it’s never too late to start.

Catherine, a valued member of our gym near Thornton, shares her inspiring story of transformation. Personal training with Coach Patrick along with our supportive community is helping her achieve her fitness goals.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, your background, and what initially brought you to our gym?

I grew up on the Western Slope and moved to Denver for graduate school. I have a wonderful family, including two amazing daughters. In 2022, I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), a chronic, inflammatory disease of the joints causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. One of the best ways to combat PsA is strength training, and I knew I needed help. After trying various gyms and workout programs without success, I sought a knowledgeable personal trainer in a supportive, non-judgmental community. That’s when I found NHF and decided to give it a try.

What were your initial fitness goals when you started at the gym?

My initial fitness goals when I started at NHF were to gain strength and mobility and hopefully experience decreased pain from my PsA.

Can you describe your fitness level and lifestyle before you started your journey with us?

I’ve always been very active and athletic, with a background in soccer, running, and coaching. However, everything had become imbalanced before I started at NHF. PsA flare-ups left me feeling weak and discouraged, and I was worried about my future mobility and overall health.

What motivated you to start your fitness journey at our gym?

The fear of losing my mobility and active lifestyle was a significant motivator for me.

What were some of the biggest obstacles or challenges you faced at the beginning of your fitness journey?

Balancing my roles as a mom, business owner, and living with a chronic illness was a significant challenge. Frequent PsA flare-ups required adjustments to my workout routine and schedule, but with the support of Coach Patrick, we found solutions.

Can you tell us about a time when you felt like giving up? What kept you going?

Early on, I considered giving up due to my discouragement with frequent flare-ups. What kept me going was my openness to discussing my challenges with the coaches, who adjusted my workout plan to accommodate my needs. Their support was crucial in my journey.

Were there any personal barriers or health issues that made your journey particularly challenging?

Besides PsA, prioritizing my health and investing time and money in personal training were barriers to overcome.

Can you highlight any significant milestones or achievements you reached along the way?

My biggest achievement has been sticking with it despite all the challenges and obstacles I’ve faced this past year. I’ve gained strength, experienced fewer PsA flare-ups, and improved my mobility.

How has your life changed since you began your fitness journey with us?

I feel better than I have in years. My pain and PsA flare-ups have significantly decreased, and my mobility and strength have increased. I’m back in my life, living it to the fullest.

Besides physical transformation, have you noticed changes in your confidence, energy levels, or overall well-being?

My overall mood, energy levels, and well-being have improved significantly since starting this journey. I can now actively participate in my life and enjoy time with my kids.

In your own words, how would you describe your experience at our gym?

I always feel welcome and supported at NHF. The coaches truly care and listen to you. They can modify any exercise to work for your individual circumstances, which has been essential to my progress.

What would you say to someone who is considering joining our gym but hasn’t taken the step yet?

If you’re looking for a gym that is welcoming, supportive, and committed to YOU and your personal goals, give NHF a try. It’s a place where you can find the support and guidance you need to achieve your fitness goals.

How would you summarize your transformation and the impact it had on your life?

A little over a year ago, I felt discouraged and hopeless due to pain and PsA flare-ups, fearing the loss of my active lifestyle. Now, I have hope, improved mobility, and can dream about the future with my family. I’m so grateful to NHF and Coach Patrick for helping me on my journey.
