For those of you who haven’t met me yet…hi, I’m Becca, one of the newest coaches at Northglenn Health and Fitness. I wanted to write to you today, to start the thought process in order to answer an important question. The question I pose to you is “What is your why?”
I first encountered this question when I was attending a leadership conference in my sophomore year of college. The keynote speaker talked about how important it is to find your “why” in order to live a fulfilling life that you could be proud of. Now, is this the only way to reach those goals, absolutely not. But what really bothered me was that I couldn’t come up with an answer!
Fast forward a few years and some more life experience and I was still stumped. I was going to school for Environmental Science, and loved the whole tree hugging aspect of it. However, I felt like that wasn’t all I had to offer. I was also coaching in a CrossFit gym in New York City, which left me felling much more fulfilled.
COVID-19 and Losing My Gym
When the COVID-19 pandemic first arrived in the city, gyms were hit hard. Most had to close down for a grace period just to figure out how to operate safely under these new conditions. Not only did this cause me to lose my job, but also my hobby and my therapist. I think it’s safe to say that like most people I was pretty lost at the beginning of this pandemic.
This is when I began to circle back to the question of “What is my why?” I no longer had the gym community to help me through these hard times. In order to be self motivated I had to explore my “Why”.
I finally came up with some answers after several days and many wine glasses later. Why do I love what I do on the athlete level and on the coaching level? Why am I driven to continue to do these things even when no one is watching?
Freedom
Here’s what I came up with. Like most people I like the rush I get after a good workout. Working out makes me feel good, but it’s more than just that.
I like the freedom I get from working out. The ability to go hiking, swimming, running, on a moments notice. To frolic (oh you bet I frolic) through the fields and to be a jungle gym for my little cousins. To still be able to play catch with my dad in the yard. The freedom I get from working out allows me to live the life I want to live.
Now, that’s from an athlete level, there’s also why’s for why I love the job that I do. When someone tells me they started to find this same freedom in their everyday life, I go CRAZY.
With all that said, this took me many years and a pandemic to come up with my “Why”. By no means do I expect you to be able to come up with it on the spot. However, I still pose the question, what is your why?
I would love to help you get healthy and fit and enjoy the freedom health and fitness can give you. And you deserve it.
