Coach Jennifer here from Northglenn Health and Fitness (NHF). Before we get into my opinion on weight loss medication, let me start by saying, I’m not a doctor, nor do I work for the FDA. But as someone who has spent years helping women find confidence and strength in their bodies, I understand the struggle that weight loss can be. When you’re putting in the work and not seeing changes, it’s disheartening.
I saw my mom face that same struggle. Like many women, she went through cycles of exercise and on-and-off eating habits. Watching her, and later seeing the toll that a lack of nutrition and fitness took on my dad, was one of the reasons my husband and I started NHF. We wanted to create a place where women can build a sustainable lifestyle that supports both their health and confidence.
Is Weight Loss Medication the Answer?
Recently, more of my clients have been curious about weight loss injections. Some are even using them, and I am so grateful that they know they can come to me with their questions and concerns. Whether you use these medications or not, that’s a personal choice. I’m here to support you either way, helping ensure that whatever approach you take is effective long-term—not just for the next few months. You have much more life to live, and I want you to be around to enjoy it!
My answer to weight loss medications has evolved over time. I still don’t see these medications as the solution, but I can understand their appeal. For some, these medications might bridge the gap between feeling stuck and seeing some initial progress. They can be a kickstart, a way to start seeing the scale move and build momentum.
But, there’s a big ‘if’ here. If these injections are just a stand-alone fix, I don’t believe they’ll offer lasting success. These drugs often work by reducing appetite, causing you to eat fewer calories, leading to faster weight loss than other methods. But consuming too few calories can deprive your body of essential nutrients and energy, making it hard to sustain muscle mass—a key factor in long-term health, bone density, metabolism, and overall strength.
The Bigger Picture: Lifestyle is Key Whether You Use Weight Loss Medication or Not
I’m here to be real with you: lasting weight loss, health, and wellness come from a combination of structured habits and sustainable lifestyle changes. These injections alone won’t create that. If your doctor believes this medication can benefit you, I strongly encourage you to also focus on building a fitness routine, strengthening your body, and making thoughtful changes in how you nourish it. This might mean refining the quality, timing, and portion of what you eat.
If you only rely on the medication, what happens when you’re “done” with it? We’ve seen it with so many diets—whether it’s Keto, Weight Watchers, or any other approach: if the new way of eating doesn’t stick as a sustainable part of your lifestyle, the weight often comes back.
Quickly want to give you a link to the Mayo Clinic’s take, note they emphasize that these weight loss medications should be taken in addition to lifestyle change, not instead of.
The Bottom Line: Your Health is a Long-Term Commitment
I’m not here to judge anyone’s path; your journey with weight is personal and valid. I can’t speak to the specific medical issues of weight loss medications, but I can tell you that when it comes to health, there’s no quick fix. If you go down to 500 calories a day, yes, you’ll lose weight. But as soon as the restriction lifts, what will sustain that weight loss?
So here’s my biggest message: if you’re using these medications, make sure they’re a stepping stone toward a lasting lifestyle change, not just another yo-yo diet. Are these injections something you want as part of your life indefinitely? Or would you rather work on building a fitness routine, creating habits in the kitchen, and making adjustments that help you wean off any temporary aids over time?
If you’re ready for support in finding a path that works for you, I’m here to help. Let’s work together to create a lifestyle that sets you up for success for the long term.
